Tweeting Bob’s Manifesto

bobmcdonnellWhen news broke Sunday that Republican Bob McDonnell had written some right wing crazy stuff in his graduate these submitted for his masters and law degrees from Pat Robertson’s CBN University, now Regent, I decided that I would read every word of his writing and tweet the best parts. I just finished.

I’ve been amazed at how effective this has been in drawing people’s attention to this document. I set up a special URL for McDonnell’s thesis — I called it http://bit.ly/BobsManifesto and linked to it in most of the tweets I’ve put out since the story broke. The traffic has been surprisingly significant.

I hope people read it Mr. McDonnell’s thesis in its entirety and the news coverage about it. In an new editorial in today’s paper, the Washington Post calls Bob McDonnell a “culture warrior”.

“…in his 14 years in the state’s General Assembly, Mr. McDonnell did aggressively pursue a socially conservative agenda largely in line with his thesis. As governor he could do the same, although he would be constrained by a legislature at least partly controlled by Democrats. He could not ban abortion and contraception, but he could help restrict access. The Bob McDonnell who wrote that thesis would make a divisive, disruptive and partisan governor — a sharp departure from the tradition of generally pragmatic executives who have helped make Virginia one of the better-managed states in the union. Virginians deserve specific answers about where the thinking of his early middle age has shifted, and where it remains consistent.”

I agree 100 percent! Continue reading

Liberty University can’t have it both ways

As I have written on this blog previously, no one should be surprised that officials at Liberty University have disbanded the school’s chapter of College Democrats. After I posted my initial thoughts on this matter, Liberty President Jerry Falwell, Jr., hedged a bit by saying that the Democrats were welcome to meet on campus, receive university funding and use the school’s name as long as they affiliated with the anti-abortion organization, Virginia Democrats for Life. This was followed by several days of negotiations, much of which have taken place in the media. That hasn’t helped Falwell, the students or Liberty.  Continue reading

Virginia’s Chapter of the Paranoid Caucus

You know how when you’re walking through the woods in the summer and you lift up a rock, remember what happens? The bugs underneath the rock run from the daylight. I feel like that’s what happened on April 15 with these AstroTurf Tea Party tax protests, except this time, the bugs didn’t run away, when America lifted up the rock. Continue reading

DeLay Defends Gov. Perry’s call for Texas Secession

Wow, to think that I thought Virginia’s right wingers were crazy! Check out former Texas Congressman Tom DeLay defending Gov. Rick Perry’s (R-Texas) call that Texas secede from the Union. Virginia’s got nothing on Texas.

Would you like irony with your tea? One lump or 2?

Today I paid my taxes. (I’m old fashioned — I still believe in that.)

I like that through our government we fund highways, law enforcement, firefighters, teachers, parks, the arts, care for the elderly, the poor, programs for kids — see Head Start, heating oil for the poor, veterans benefits, school lunches and breakfasts for poor kids, the military — especially snipers that kill pirates, Social Security, student loans, farm loans, home loans, entities which regulate drugs, food, financial services, banks, insurance — we need more of that, not less, scientific research, housing for the homeless and poor, among other things.

As Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “I like to pay taxes. With them I buy civilization.” Continue reading
